Welcome to MotorWeb Product

Since you've found yourself here, then you'll likely be looking for more information on the products and services MotorWeb offers.

Let's first tell you a little bit about MotorWeb.

MotorWeb Overview

MotorWeb started in New Zealand back in the late 90's offering vehicle history reports to car buyers at car fairs.

As Bruce Springsteen sang, "From small things (big things one day come)" and so it was for MotorWeb. Over the past 20 odd years MotorWeb has grown into New Zealand's most trust vehicle data provider, so much so that Trade Me purchased the company in 2015.

Further to this, MotorWeb expanded into the Australian market and has established itself as the insurance industry's preferred plate to vehicle specification matching service.

What Does MotorWeb Do?

At our core, we take a vehicle registration plate and translate it into the year, make, model and sub-model.

So we take a plate EAN272 and turn it into:

2007 Mitsubishi Outlander XLS

This doesn't sound like much but for our business customers like Insurers, Finance Companies, Vehicle Dealers, Parts Suppliers, Online Platforms (Trade Me) and Local Authorities this means that they don't have to rely on the customer to know and supply this information and get it right.

It is amazing how many people don't know the details of their vehicle!

It's a blue hatchback?

But we do more than just that, we also provide vehicle history information, compliance information, ownership information, vehicle specifications, vehicle valuations.

We are proud to be a vehicle data aggregator, pulling together disparate data sources (including our own) to provide customers with the right data for their specific needs.

Sure, our customers could do this themselves, but then they would need to develop, maintain and call multiple APIs, create and manage commercial relationships with multiple vendors and still not benefit from the pricing that MotorWeb can secure due to its scale.

What we do is hard, we're constantly looking for new data sources that could make a difference to our customers. We work closely with them to bring them to market in a way that is effective and efficient.

What Industries Does MotorWeb Serve?

Insurance and Finance

If you've ever looked for vehicle insurance or vehicle finance online, then it's likely you've benefitted from a MotorWeb service. When you're asked to enter your car's registration number we're the one's that actually identify the vehicle behind it:

Knowing this information helps Insurance and Finance companies to better understand your vehicle in terms of its risk and value and also makes sure that, should a customer make a claim or finance not be repaid, then everyone is aligned on what the car is and who owns it.

The last thing you want is to insure your 2024 Tesla Model 3 for $70K yet your insurer thinks its a $7K, 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander.

But again, we do more than this.

We provide all sorts of vehicle related information that makes it easier for Insurance and Finance companies to value a car, create their pricing models, reduce their risk and optimise their operational processes.

Our Insurance and Finance customers primarily use our APIs for high volume and automated processes but also utilise our MotorWeb Portal for more manual processes such as processing an Insurance claim.

Vehicle Dealers (NZ)

MotorWeb provides a comprehensive set of services to Vehicle Dealers starting with plate to vehicle matching to vehicle information reports through to NZTA transactions such as change of ownership.

Our flagship report is the Vehicle Information Report (VIR) which has been the benchmark for Vehicle Dealers for many years. We are constantly looking to add value to this report for our customers.

Our Dealer users primarily use the MotorWeb portal for manual transactions such as:

  • VIR for vehicle trade ins

  • Basic Vehicle Information (BVI) for the service team

  • Market valuations to understand the price of a vehicle for benchmarking

  • Change of ownership transactions (MR13B, MR13C)

  • Sales agreements

  • Purchase agreements

  • Consumer Information notices

Everything a Vehicle Dealer needs to advertise, buy or sell a car.

Online Platforms

We power a number of online vehicle platforms offering vehicles parts and services. We even power Trade Me in NZ!

Again this is a case of helping our customers to identify the specifications of a vehicle based simply on its registration plate or VIN. This makes it so much easier for someone to list a vehicle for sale.

The following data on a Trade Me listing is all provided by MotorWeb:
